Magnolia Unka

Magnolia is a Dene member of the Deninu Kue First Nation in the Northwest Territories. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies in 2005 and from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Laws in 2008.

Magnolia's Native Studies Degree enhanced her knowledge of the extensive injustices and resulting hardships that First Nations people experience in Canada. As a First Nations person she resolved to continue her education through law school to help First Nations reconcile these injustices through the legal system.

Magnolia focused her legal education on aboriginal law. She participated in the Kawaskimhon ("Speaking with Knowledge") Aboriginal Rights Moot in 2007. While at law school she was the President of the First Nations Law Students Association and the UBC Student Representative for the Indigenous Bar Association. She summered with Legal Registries in the Northwest Territories researching and drafting condominium guides for the Director of Legal Registries and the Land Titles Registrar.

Magnolia was raised by traditional bi-lingual Dene parents and grandparents who instilled within her a strong pride of culture and tradition. She participates in ceremonies on a regular basis ensuring that the teachings of her Elders remain with her as she moves forward in her legal career. She plans to use her traditional understanding and respect for her teachings to ensure that First Nations rights and legal traditions are heard and understood in the Canadian legal system. She understands that the oral tradition is paramount in this quest.

Magnolia is a member of the Indigenous Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association and is a member of the Youth Volunteer Circle with the Native Women's Association.

Magnolia joined Rath & Company in June 2008 as an articling student and was called to the bar in July 2009. Magnolia remains with Rath and Company as an associate lawyer. Magnolia's practice focuses on First Nations' consultation, First Nation Band matters, treaty rights, Indian Residential School claims, specific claims as well as general litigation.
