Marie D. Pearson

Marie Pearson is currently on leave.

Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Marie moved to Calgary in 1997 with her three young children to be closer to her extended family and to attend the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary. Marie's grandfather is a respected Elder of the Michel Band, a northern Alberta First Nation that has been fighting for recognition as a Band under the Indian Act for over four decades.

Drawing on her family's own experiences with both historical and current injustices under the federal regime, Marie took a special interest in Aboriginal law during her legal studies and quickly discovered that she wanted to dedicate her career to advancing the rights of First Nations.

Marie joined Rath & Company as an articling student in 2000 and remained with the firm as a junior associate lawyer until 2002 before spending two years with Alberta Justice as a prosecutor in youth court. Although her decision to leave Rath & Company and the practice of Aboriginal law was a difficult one, she accepted the opportunity to develop her skills in the courtroom. After her work with Alberta Justice, Marie briefly practiced in the area of general litigation and then dedicated some time to her family as she and her husband welcomed a new baby in late 2004.

During her two years at home with her young daughter, Marie sharpened her skills in regulatory law through the completion of several regulatory compliance courses and taught Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Criminal Justice Program at Bow Valley College. She returned to Rath & Company in early 2007, where she has since dedicated much of her practice to Indian Residential School matters.
